Engelberg is a tourist destination and one of the most famous Swiss ski resorts. It is located at the foot of the Titlis peak and is famous for its excellent ski slopes, and in summer for numerous opportunities for active leisure.
The village was founded in 1120 at the Benedictine Engelberg Monastery. To this day, it is the most important monument in the area, and its buildings dominate the village. The monastery operates continuously and today it is still inhabited by several dozen monks.
The buildings in Engelberg are typically Alpine, with numerous guest houses and apartments in traditional wooden houses decorated with flowers. In summer, tourists who want to go hiking in the mountains come here. The surrounding peaks, with the Titlis over 3,000 m above sea level at the fore, offer dozens of kilometers of perfectly groomed hiking trails, as well as climbing routes and ferratas such as the Klettersteig Rigidalstockwand.
A famous attraction in Engleberg is the Titlis Cliff Walk, the 100-meter-long suspension bridge and the Ice Flyer cable car. There is a natural ice cave on the slopes of Titlis, which is open to the public. there is also a summer toboggan run.
In winter, Engleberg turns into a true skier's paradise. There are over 80 km of ski slopes of various difficulty levels and 30 km of cross-country ski runs. Numerous lifts and cable cars operate, such as the Titlis Engleberg Cable Car, the Engelberg - Gerschnialp Cable Car, the Brunni Cable Car, the Rotair Stand - Titlis Cable Car and many more. Due to its glacier location, the ski season in Engelberg runs from mid-October to early May.
