Kapellbrücke
Local name: Kapellbrücke
The Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) on the Reuss River in Lucerne dates from 1333. It is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe. Its length is 204 meters, the bridge is completely covered. At its southern end, you can admire the medieval water tower, part of the old city fortifications.
An important decorative element of the building are antique paintings, whose creation dates back to the seventeenth century. 112 paintings depict historical events related to the fight for independence of the country, the fate of the city's inhabitants and the life of Saint. Léger and Maurice.
The water tower, preserved to this day, has served various purposes over the centuries, including a treasury, for some time its rooms served as a prison and even a torture chamber. In 1993, there was a fire, part of the bridge and the paintings burned down completely, the bridge was reconstructed.
