St. Beatus Caves
Local name: St. Beatus-Höhlen
Karst phenomenon Caves of St. Beatusa are located on the Swiss lakes Interlaken. A kilometer route of underground pavements among rock formations with stalagmites, stalactites and stalagnates has been made available for sightseeing. A museum dedicated to this geological formation was also established near the caves.
St. Caves Beatusa formed water in Jurassic limestone rocks for millions of years. The total length of discovered, penetrated and explored caves in this area is about 14 km. They are located in the forest, near the waterfalls on the river, whose waters carved the rock creating this characteristic geological phenomenon.
The caves got their name from a monk from the 6th century, Saint. Beatus. The local legend is associated with this saint. She says that the monk was hunting a dragon in these areas and wanted to kill him. The mythological creature escaped from the saints and took refuge in caves near the Interlaken lakes.
