Sant Cugat del Vallès is a historic town known for its viticulture and its Romanesque Benedictine monastery.
The origins of the city date back to the 4th century AD, when the Romans built their fortress, Castrum Octavianum, here. A Benedictine monastery, which is one of the most important in Catalonia, was erected on its ruins.
Sant Cugat Monastery was built in the 9th century in Romanesque style. Its treasure is the 12th century cloister, and the adjacent monastery church hides numerous works of sacred art. Currently, the monastery has the Sant Cugat Museum, which presents the history of the monastery and the entire city.
In the Old Town, you can see many interesting houses with preserved farms. These include 14th-century Can Rabella, 16th-century Can Ballet and 17th-century Torre Blanca. In one of the buildings there is the House of Cal Gerrer Museum, where you can see what the everyday life of Sant Cugat was like.
The Sant Cugat area is famous for viticulture and wine production. In addition to just admiring the vineyards on the slopes of the hills, you can also visit local vineyards, including the Modernist Vineyard, and take part in guided tours and tastings.
