The Sagrada Família, or Holy Family Penitential Temple, is a beautiful Art Nouveau church in Barcelona, considered the peak achievement of the architect Antonio Gaudí. The monumental temple was supposed to resemble one large organism. Only eight of the planned 18 towers have been built to modern times, the highest of which is to measure 170 meters in height. They symbolize 12 apostles, 4 evangelists, Mary and Jesus. After completing the tower dedicated to Jesus, the Sagrada Familia will become the tallest church in the world.
Construction of the church has been going on for over 100 years, it was initiated in 1882 and its planning is to be completed in 2026, exactly 100 years after Gaudi's death. Unfortunately, the temple's designs left by its architect were destroyed by Catalan anarchists during the Spanish Civil War. The work is additionally hindered by the uniqueness of architectural details, none of which are identical and must be carved separately. Gaudi's will was to finish the temple only with private donations, which is why the construction is not financed by the Spanish government.
