The Hospital of the Holy Cross and Saint Paul is located in the Eixample district. It is an Art Nouveau building erected by Lluis Domenech and Montener. Since 1997, it has been included in the UNESCO list. The main part of the hospital is an administrative building with a huge mosaic depicting the history of the institution and rich sculptural decoration.
The hospital of the Holy Cross has been operating in Barcelona since the Middle Ages. In the nineteenth century, after the expansion of the city, it became necessary to enlarge it. The new facility was decided to be located on the outskirts of the new Eixample district. He designed it in the then fashionable Art Nouveau style Lluis Domenech and Montener. The hospital consists of an administrative building resembling a palace and 18 pavilions. They all connected with underground corridors with the surgical block. Each building is different, decorated with sculptures and mosaics characteristic of Barcelona's Art Nouveau.
The buildings of the hospital were used until the beginning of the 21st century. then underwent a major renovation, and the sick wards were moved to modern buildings.
