Mataró is a large city on the Mediterranean coast. There is a port with a marina and a sandy beach. In the town's buildings, you can find buildings designed by Josep Puig and Cadafalch, one of the leading Spanish architects of the first half of the 20th century.
The city has its origins in Roman times, when there was a large commercial port here. During the excavations, the ruins of Roman baths and villas from the 1st century AD were discovered here at the archaeological site of Torre Llauder.
The most characteristic buildings of the city were built in the Art Nouveau and modernist styles. Antonio Gaudi realized his first major project here. It was a factory building that has been turned into an exhibition hall and the Nau Gaudi cultural center today and is Mataró's greatest attraction.
The modernist architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch was also active in the city. He developed projects for the new town hall, Casa Coll and Regàs, Casa Perera, Casa Sisternes and several others.
You can learn about the history of the city in the Mataró Museum, which presents, among others, items discovered during archaeological excavations. There is also a Museum of Contemporary Art with an exhibition of Catalan art.
