Colares is a small municipality located on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. It is home to the famous Cape of Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe.
The coast at Colares is cliff-like. There are small sandy beaches at the foot of the rocks and traditional villages on the cliffs. In many of them, you can find intimate guesthouses and apartments that allow you to relax in peace away from the main tourist traffic.
The biggest attraction in Colares is Cabo da Roca. This small cape is the destination of many tourists because in Europe it is impossible to go further west. On the cape there is an obelisk topped with a cross and a lighthouse. There is also a viewpoint from which you can admire the ocean waves crashing against the rocks.
Below the cliffs there are small beaches squeezed under the rocks. The most characteristic beach is Ursa, next to which soaring rocks rise straight from the water. Aroeira beach is also very picturesque.
The coast of Colares is dotted with small villages worth visiting. They have their own unique traditional atmosphere. It is also not far from here to Sintra, around which there are fabulous castles and palaces of the former Portuguese aristocracy. Apart from them, you can also visit the ruins of the Capuchin monastery.
