San Pawl il-Baħar is a city in the northeast of Malta, whose name is associated with Saint Paul, whose boat crashed on a small island in the bay on which the city lies. It is now a popular holiday resort and pilgrimage destination.
The city was founded by the Knights of St. John, its most characteristic building is the Wignacourt defensive tower, which was one of the northernmost strongholds of the order. Today, it operates a small museum showing the history of military architecture in Malta.
San Pawl il-Baħar is associated with the missionary travels of St. Paul. In the bay there is a small island on which the apostle's ship was to crash. It is a place considered as a symbol of Christianity reaching Malta and crowds of pilgrims come here. To commemorate this event, a monument to St. Paul.
The village is also a popular seaside resort, with pebble beaches and small, secluded coves that provide vacationers with privacy. There are many guesthouses, hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops in the town.
