Vimercate is a city with a history dating back to Roman times. Among its monuments are, among others Franciscan monastery decorated with frescoes from the 14th century

The city developed as a commercial center during Roman times. In the 3rd century AD, a bridge was built here, which has survived to this day. It is the oldest Roman bridge in northern Italy still in use. In the Middle Ages, entrance gates were added to it at both ends.

The city has the oldest partially preserved district, which in the past was limited by defensive walls. You can see here, among others The 13th-century collegiate church of St. Stephen, Church of St. Mary and several baroque and classicist city palaces.

Outside the former city walls, there is a Franciscan convent, one of the most important attractions of Vimercate. Built on the site of an 11th-century tourist hostel, it has retained its Romanesque appearance to this day. Inside there are frescoes from the fourteenth century referring to the pact concluded between the Visconti family and the Sforza
