Treviglio is a historic city that is often called the "city of the courtyards". The old town is dominated by historic tenement houses and palaces with picturesque courtyards, some of which are open to the public.
The city developed in the 10th-11th centuries on the site of a former Roman settlement. The local St. Martin, built on the ruins of the early Christian church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a temple with a preserved Romanesque body, but rebuilt many times, so its appearance can also be distinguished by gothic and baroque elements.
A great attraction of Treviglio is the preserved historic buildings of the old town, consisting of bourgeois houses and aristocratic palaces with courtyards. Some of them have been developed by restaurants and shops, others remain private. There are also several historic churches, including the Madonna delle Lacrime sanctuary, and the still-functioning Bar Milano, which opened in 1896, with original Art Nouveau furnishings.
