Sutri is a historic town situated picturesquely on a hill made of volcanic tuffs. There is a large Roman amphitheater and an Etruscan necropolis.

In antiquity, Sutri was an important center inhabited by the Etruscans, after which a cemetery carved in tufa rocks has been preserved. It was situated on the Via Cassia road and had a strategic position due to its location. This did not change after the Romans occupied these areas. The greatest attractions of Sutri, the Roman Amphitheater, the remains of walls and gates, and the ruins of several temples have been preserved from the Roman period.

During the Middle Ages, the city was under the authority of the popes. A synod led by Emperor Henry III was held here in 1046. Several interesting churches have been preserved in the city from those times, including the Romanesque cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. In the Natural Park of the Ancient City of Sutri, you can visit the rock church Sacello Madonna Parto, located in a grotto that the Etruscans carved for their cemetery.
