St. Peter's Square
Local name: Piazza San Pietro
The vast square is just in front of the Basilica of Saint. Peter. It was built in the mid-17th century. The square is surrounded by a portico with 140 statues of the saints of the Catholic Church. In the center of the square stands an Egyptian obelisk dating back to the 13th century BC and measuring 40 m in height. There are also two symmetrical fountains.
