NETTUNO tourist attractions

Nettuno is a coastal town known for its sandy beaches and a nicely preserved medieval old town. There is a pilgrimage site of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grace.

Nettuno went down in history primarily during World War II. Its long beaches were the place where, in January 1944, the Allied troops attacked the Gustav Line, defended by the Germans. Particularly bloody fights took place then for the nearby Anzio. A memento of these events is the American soldiers' cemetery situated in a quiet park.

Despite heavy fighting, the medieval center of Nettuno is largely preserved in its original shape. It is located on the seashore, and from its side it is protected by Fort Sangallo, built at the beginning of the 16th century. Inside the walls, there is a charming tangle of narrow streets and squares as well as old tenement houses with restaurants and souvenir shops.

One of the decorations of Nettuno is the baroque fountain of the god Neptune, from which the city takes its name. In the new part you can also see some nice Art Nouveau villas that used to belong to wealthy Roman families and were intended for summer holidays. The attraction of Nettuno are its sandy beaches, largely well-kept and very well equipped with equipment rentals and dining facilities.
