Preweli is an area in Crete that includes the Piso Preveli Monastery and the nearby beach. This area is often visited by tourists due to the beautiful views and the possibility of visiting the only palm grove on the island.
Piso Preveli Monastery was founded around 1000 and has been an important center of Greek culture for centuries. It consisted of two buildings: the upper Piso Preveli monastery and the lower Kato Preveli monastery. Today, the lower part of the Preveli monastery is in ruins. The monks live in the upper monastery that is open to the public. There are several churches and a monastery museum with a rich collection of liturgical art.
A big attraction of Prewela is the Preveli beach located at the mouth of the gorge of the same name. What distinguishes it from other beaches in Crete is an olive grove that grows around a small lake created as a result of damaging the mouth of the gorge by rapids carried by the river.
