Piso Preveli Monastery

Local name: Μονή Πίσω Πρέβελη

The monastery was founded in the 16th century on the site of earlier monk habitats. During the Turkish occupation it was an important resistance point for the local population and a mainstay of Greek culture. During World War II, monks helped the Allied forces that landed in Crete. The current buildings of the monastery come from the nineteenth century. In the monastery museum you can see icons and vestments.
