Tittmoning is a small town with a well-preserved historic center and a 13th-century castle that used to belong to Salzburg's bishops.
The city was founded in the 11th century, and in the 13th century the construction of the local castle began. It was a border fortress that was to protect Bavaria from attack from Austria. Over time, the stronghold lost its military significance, and became more and more frequently visited residence of the bishops of nearby Salzburg.
