SCHONGAU tourist attractions

+6 attractions

Schongau is a small, picturesque town on the Bavarian Romantic Road. The towers of the baroque church tower over the low-rise buildings, and the green surroundings create a nice setting for traditional architecture.

In the Middle Ages, Schongau was an important trade center on the Lech River, but after the main routes through Bavaria were changed, it lost its importance. It remained a small, local merchant and craft center.

Beautifully situated at the foot of the forested Schongau hills, it delights with its architecture. Within the former city walls, whose fragments with towers can still be admired, there are nice tenement houses from different eras and the church of St. George built in the baroque style.
