Schönau am Königssee is a tourist destination in the Bavarian Alps which is an excellent base for those who like active tourism and mountain hiking. Around there are hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty, and the most famous place in the area is standing on a peninsula at the foot of the rock wall of the Sanctuary of St. Bartholomew.
The Royal Lake or Königssee is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the alpine lakes. Above, in the valley, separated by a moraine, there is another lake here, Obersee or Upper Lake.
Both reservoirs are the main attraction of Schönau. Cruises on Lake Königssee are very popular, especially to the harbor of St. Bartholomä at the monastery and shrine from the 12th century. Above the church, which is one of the most photographed Bavarian views, begins the trail leading to the Ice Chapel, a natural ice cave on the slopes of the Watzmann mountain. A very picturesque place is also a covered wooden pedestrian bridge, and the most beautiful views of the lake can be admired from the Malerwinkel Viewpoint.
The Upper Lake can be reached via the trail from Schönau. There is a hostel and a traditional restaurant Saletalm - Obersee with views of the surrounding peaks and the lake. Excursion boats float on the reservoir.
The area around Schönau am Königssee is famous for its beautiful waterfalls. Many of them, such as Schrainbachfall, Königsbach Falls and Rothbach Falls can be seen from the trails nearby. A great viewpoint is the Jenner observation deck, which can be reached by the Jenner Cableway.
