Hohenwerfen Castle is a fortification built at the beginning of the 11th century on top of a massive rock. It is surrounded by the Berchtesgaden Alps and the Tennengebirge mountain range. The castle was inhabited by princes and archbishops, but also served as a military base, and even served as a prison for a short time.
You can reach the castle on foot (it takes about 20 minutes to complete the route) or use the roller coaster. The interior of the castle is open to the public, which unfortunately was significantly damaged by a fire in 1931.
Interestingly, despite its massiveness, the construction of the entire castle took only 3 years (1075-1078), which is an extremely good result, considering the times and technical difficulties in which it was created.
The castle was used for photos for five historical films - including "For eagles only."
