Landshut is a historic Bavarian city and in the past the seat of the princely family of Wittelsbach. It boasts a well-preserved Old Town and Trausnitz Castle towering over the buildings.
The history of the city begins in the 12th century, when the Wittelsbach family built their castle here. In the Middle Ages it was one of the most important cities of the region and as a prince's seat a significant administrative center. It wasn't until the 16th century succession wars that caused the region to join Bavaria to lose its importance to Munich.
The time of the greatest glory of Landshut is inseparably connected with the castle Trausnitz and Wittelsbach. Today, within the fortress walls, you can visit, among others late Romanesque castle chapel and several exhibitions dedicated to history. Every 4 years, the city hosts the medieval festival Wedding in Landshut, which is celebrated in remembrance of the marriage of Prince Jerzy Bogaty Wittelsbach with Jadwiga Jagiellonka.
The Old Town in Landshut is a picturesque tangle of cobbled streets, full of tenements with nice, often decorated facades. The main building here is the Basilica of St. Marcin and Kastulus with a tower over 130 m tall, which is considered the highest brick Gothic tower in the world. Fragments of the city fortifications with the Landshut Gate have also survived.
The city also has several interesting museums, the most important of which is the Landshut Museum, which presents exhibitions related to the history of the city. The youngest will have a great time at the Kazimierz Museum, discovering the history and culture of the region with Kazimierz, the hero of Marlene Reider's books. The Hofberg Sculpture Museum, in turn, has large art collections.
