Königswinter lies on the Rhine, at the foot of the hills called Transylvania. These are ideal recreation areas, perfect for hiking and cycling trips. The main attraction of the city is Drachenfels hill, which can be reached by historic train.
The beginnings of the city are associated with the construction of a stronghold on Drachenfels in the 12th century. Today, the ruins of the Drachenfels Castle are considered one of the most picturesque in the Rhine Valley. At the beginning of the 19th century, German poet Heinrich Heine appreciated their beauty and chose them as one of his poems.
On the hill there is the Drachenfels viewing platform and a restaurant. Nearby is the romantic Drachenburg Castle, which was built in the 19th century by one of German industrialists. The Drachenfels train runs to the top, a historic cog railway that has been transporting tourists since 1882.
The city's attraction is also the Nibelungenhalle, a dome-covered building inspired by the work of Richard Wagner. It is surrounded by a garden, which is perfect for walking. Sea Life Königswinter has a completely different character, a marine aquarium belonging to the network of similar objects built in different cities of Germany.
The area around Königswinter is hilly and full of woods and forests. There are many walking and cycling paths of varying lengths. You can learn about the history and nature of this picturesque region at the Siebengebirgs Museum. A good opportunity to see the whole area from the water is a cruise on the Rhine Königswinter Ferry, which connects the city with nearby Bonn.
