The preserved Romanesque fragments of the building testify to the existence of the castle as early as the 9th century. In the 14th century, the stronghold was expanded: the towers were raised and walls 3.5 m thick were erected. In the Middle Ages there was a chain anchored in the castle hill that could block the flow of ships on the Moselle River. The currently restored building is a museum.
