Cochem is a historic city lying among the vineyard-covered hills on the banks of the Moselle. It is known primarily for its powerful medieval imperial castle standing on a rock above the river valley.
Cochem Castle was built in the 12th century on the border river Moselle. It was the seat of the imperial administration and a fortress defending the surrounding areas against invasion by France. Today, after repeated reconstruction, the stronghold looks like a fairy-tale castle, and the surrounding landscapes complete it.
Below the castle extends the picturesque Old Town, whose center is the market square surrounded by half-timbered houses. Many houses of this type can also be seen in the surrounding streets. There is also a Baroque town hall on the market square, and the stone church of St. Marcin's tower with an onion topping.
In Cochem, you can also visit some interesting museums. The most important of them is the Historical Mustard Mill, which is over 200 years old, in which an exhibition devoted to mustard production is presented and workshops for its production are organized. In turn, in the Gemstone Museum you can learn about the methods of treating precious minerals and learn about local craft traditions.
