Burg Eltz is a medieval castle located on the hills above the Moselle river. It is still owned by the same Eltz family who lived there in the 12th century, 33 generations. The castle belongs to the community of common heirs.
The building is divided into several parts that belong to different families. The houses of the Rübenach and Rodendorf families in the castle are open to the public, while the Kempenich family uses the third part of the castle as a dwelling. Visitors to the castle can admire the knights' hall with the painting of Lucas Cranachs "Madonna with Child and Grapes", the most famous work of art in Eltz, a treasury with gold, silver and porcelain artifacts and an armory full of antique weapons and armor.
The castle is located in Eltzer Wald, a nature reserve with a beautiful, picturesque landscape, full of rare species of plants and animals. It is also located in an attractive tourist area full of hiking trails.
