Kiel is one of the largest ports on the Baltic Sea. Many of its tourist attractions are associated with the sea, and the advantage is the unique atmosphere of the port city with lots of bars and entertainment venues.
The history of Kiel goes back to medieval times. During this period, the city experienced a period of enormous development thanks to profits derived from trade. It belonged to the Hanza and Kieler Umschlag took place here. From 1773 to 1864, the port was under Danish sovereignty, and Danish influence is still visible today.
A large shipyard and naval base operated in Kiel. Stationed here among others famous U-boats. For this reason, during World War II, the city was severely bombed several times. The reconstruction of the Old Town began only at the end of the 20th century.
A large part of Kiel's attractions is related to the sea. The most important of them is Aquarium Geomar belonging to the marine research center. It lives in temperate and cold sea marine animals, including seals and whales. You can get to know the city's connections with the sea in the Fischhalle Maritime Museum next to the port.
The Promenada Kiellinie stretching along the docks is a great place for walks. In turn, people who like unusual shopping and small bars and cafes can go to Holtenauer Street. The city also has an 800-meter sandy Schilksee Beach, the Botanical Garden and the Tiergehege Tannenberg animal park just outside.
There are also interesting museums here. In addition to the Maritime Museum, you can visit the Zoological Museum in Kiel, the City Museum of the Warleberger Hof, the Computer Museum, the Historical Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the Geological and Mineralogical Museum.
