The monument, erected in 1936, was originally dedicated to the soldiers of the naval fleet during World War I, and has been commemorating sailors of all nationalities who died at sea since 1954. The 85-meter tower designed by Gustav August Munzer has a viewing platform at the top. In the vicinity of the monument there is a museum ship, the famous U-Boot 955.
