The village was founded in the 11th century and was connected until the 19th century with the nearby monastery of St. Blasien. From the mid-19th century, tourism, including skiing, began to develop here. The village has traditional buildings with many wooden houses and is situated in a mountain valley. Its individual parts form separate settlements situated at different heights and surrounded by vast mountain meadows.

The area around Bernau im Schwarzwald offers many scenic attractions. There are nice views from the top of Herzogenhorn. There are also many hiking and biking trails. An interesting route is the Magic Forest, an educational trail with sculptures depicting characters from fairy tales. To complete it, you have to solve puzzles at individual stations that guide you to the next points.

In winter, there are two ski resorts on the slopes of Herzogenhorn, and there are several kilometers of cross-country skiing trails in the valley. There is also a toboggan run and a seasonal ice rink.
