Danube Source
Local name: Donauquelle
The source of the Danube is in the form of a small pond surrounded by an iron fence. The source is adorned with a sculpture by Adolf Heer from 1895 as well as ornaments and another sculpture made by Franz Xavier Reich.
The sculpture of Adolf Heer is at the top of the pool and depicts two figures - Baar, which is the central plateau of Germany, as mother earth and the Danube, her daughter symbolizing the way to the world.
Officially, two streams, Breg and Brigach, are the beginning of the Danube River. However, disputes continue to this day and the issue of the source of the river raises a lot of controversy. Breg, which is the larger of the two streams feeding the Danube, comes from the town of Furtwangen. Many are looking for the source of the river there, although it was attributed to Donaueschingen during the Roman Empire.
In 1981, the German government issued an official decision recognizing Donaueschingen as the sole source of the Danube.
