Donaueschingen is a place associated with two attractions. The first is the source of the Danube, one of the largest European rivers. The other is Germany's largest golf center, which receives thousands of fans of this sport from around the world every year.
Where the Danube sources are actually located, scientists argue to this day. The river is formed by the streams Breg and Brigach, which near Donaueschingen merge into one river. It was not possible to determine which of them was bigger. However, in 1981, the German government officially recognized the town of Donaueschingen as the place where the Danube has its origins. The source of Donauquelle is surrounded by a stylized well, above which there is a sculpture of Mother Earth and her daughter Danube River, which symbolizes the way to the world.
The city was founded at the end of the 9th century and was a local trade center during the Middle Ages. In the 13th century, the city received the right to brew beer, which gave rise to the Fürstenberg brewery, which still operates today. Donaueschingen had a nice old town with picturesque tenements, but unfortunately in 1908 it was destroyed by fire. Despite the reconstruction of some of the buildings, the entire premises could not be recreated.
Donaueschingen also attracts golf lovers. For enthusiasts of this sport awaits one of the largest golf centers in Germany, a place to play numerous competitions of national and international rank.
