Ammersee is the third largest lake in Bavaria. This name is also used to describe the areas on its shore that do not belong to any of the localities. These are mainly recreational and walking areas.
The lake is of glacial origin and is classified as an alpine lake. Currently, it is primarily of a tourist nature and is a popular destination for weekend trips for residents of nearby Munich.
There are several holiday resorts on the shores of the lake that provide access to beaches and bathing areas. There are also canoe, boat, sailboat and pedal boat rentals, as well as numerous restaurants and bars.
The main attraction of the Ammersee are the Ammersee cruises. From the deck you can admire the surrounding scenery and mountain views. There are also regular ferry connections between the towns lying on the shores.
