Litomierzyce is one of the oldest towns in the Czech Republic. It has a historic urban layout and many interesting monuments, including the castle and the cathedral of St. Stephen.
The city was built on the site of an earlier Slavic stronghold, and the first written records of it come from the 10th century. It was an important commercial center, and due to its status as a free royal city, it had many privileges allowing for rapid development.
Until World War II, the majority of Litomierzyce's population was Germans. They were then resettled beyond the border located a short distance away. Their heritage in the form of monuments remains. In addition, the attractiveness of the entire area is increased by belonging to a wine region and numerous vineyards.
The oldest monument in the city is the Castle in Litomierzyce. It is now home to the Center of Czech Wine. You can visit an exhibition showing the history of winemaking and viticulture, as well as take part in tastings and demonstrations.
The attraction of Litomierzyce is the preserved medieval urban layout with a large market square, Renaissance houses of U Kalicha and Pod Czarnym Orłem, a Gothic town hall and the baroque Cathedral of St. Stephen. Interesting museums in the city include the Regional Museum in Litomierzyce, the North Bohemian Gallery of Fine Arts, the Gallery and Museum of the Diocese of Litomierzyce and the Museum of Crystal Touch.
