Petronell-Carnuntum is a small town in Lower Austria, near Vienna. Here are some of the remains of the Roman city and legion camp from the first centuries of our era in this part of Europe.
Carnuntum, a Roman legion camp was founded in the first century AD. A city grew out of it, which was the capital of Upper Pannonia. About 50 thousand lived here people. Today it is one of the largest archaeological sites of the Roman period in Central Europe. In the place where the city was located there is an open-air archaeological museum, in which you can visit reconstructed houses and public buildings. There is also a part in which the original remains of the Roman city were made available to visitors. The Roman Festival is held every year at the open-air museum.
Petronell-Canuntum is located in the Danube Valley. Around there are areas that are perfect for active tourism, primarily bicycle tours and nature walks.
Although the most important monument in the village are Roman excavations, you can also see the round Romanesque chapel of St. Jana and the small palace of Petronell. Interesting palaces are located in nearby towns, including Hof, Eckartsau, Rohrau.
