It is the oldest working zoo in the world. It is located in the Schonbrum Park. Together with the Schonbrunn palace and garden complex, it has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The facility deals with animal protection and conducts educational activities.
Among the attractions at the ZOO include the pavilion with a rainforest and a part presenting South American animals. You can also see: pandas, African elephants, polar bears, cheetahs, koala marsupials and emperor penguins.
The facility was opened to the public as an imperial menagerie in 1752. In 1828 a pavilion for giraffes was built, and in 1900 the first Indian elephant in Europe was born in the ZOO.
