This is a historic baroque palace designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrundt. It consists of two buildings separated by a garden in which museums are located. The site is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The museums located in the Belvedere buildings present a large collection of paintings by famous painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
The oldest part of the complex is a French-style garden, decorated with statues of sphinxes. It dates from around 1700 - then the land for the construction of the palace was bought. Initially, the Upper Belvedere was a place for banquets and celebrations, while the lower one was used for residential purposes. Later, both buildings served as a place to store a collection of tsarist family paintings.
They have housed museums since the First World War.
