There is the largest collection of Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day. The collection also includes works by artists from abroad. The largest collection consists of paintings by Austrian painters from the fin de siècle and secession periods.
The museum complex is divided into several parts. In the Lower Belvedere you can see Baroque painting and sculpture, including a collection of sculptures by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt. The Upper Belvedere presents works of the era of Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier, Historicism and Impressionism, as well as the art of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Festive stables converted into so-called The Treasury houses medieval art with 220 exhibits. The 21er Haus and Augarten Contemporary buildings are intended for the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, and temporary exhibitions are organized in the Orangery.
