Forchtenstein is a small town whose most important monument is a medieval castle. It belonged for several hundred years to the Hungarian family of Esterhazy, being its family treasury.
The town has a medieval origin and developed as a center subordinate to the castle standing on the hill. Initially, the stronghold belonged to the Mattersdorf-Forchtenstein family, but in the 17th century it became the property of the Habsburgs. They donated it to the distinguished Hungarian family of Esterhazy, who still owns the building to this day.
Forchtenstein Castle is the city's main attraction. Its tour includes the representative rooms, courtyards and a chapel. Some of the rooms have been excluded from public use, this applies, inter alia, to the former treasury where the family's jewels were kept. There is a museum in the castle with a collection of works of art and an exhibition of medieval weapons.
