WESTON-SUPER-MARE tourist attractions

+1 attraction

Weston-super-Mare is a famous resort town on the Bristol Channel. It is famous for its pier offering many attractions, as well as the wide beach and the adjoining promenade with Victorian town houses.

Although the city has existed since the time before the Norman invasion, until the 19th century it was only a small center, the inhabitants of which were engaged in agriculture and fishing. Due to the variable water level in the Bristol Channel and the frequent inundations and floods, this place was not considered a good place for a port or a large commercial axis.

The situation changed at the beginning of the 19th century when a local landowner built a summer house for his family in Weston-super-Mare. He was followed by others, and in 1808 the first hotel was built in the town. It operates to this day as the Royal Hotel. The opening of the hotel and resort started the rapid development of the city. Built, among others strolling Great Pier, which is today one of Weston-super-Mare's top attractions.

The Great Pier is not only a walking area along with the promenade, but also offers numerous entertainment options, such as a restaurant or a games room in the pavilion at the end of the pier. Next to it, there is a wide, sandy beach with the Funland amusement park in summer. In the city, you can also visit the SeaQuarium and go on a steamboat tour under the Bristol Channel.

The history of Weston-super-Mare and the surrounding area is provided by the local museum. In turn, on the outskirts of the town, on the site of the former RAF base, there is the Helicopter Museum.
