Mendip Hills

Mendip Hills is a range of hills 30 km long and 10 km wide. It has been included in the AONB, or "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty." There is a landscape park and a geological reserve here. There are many walking and cycling routes in the hills. It is also worth going to the Cheddar Gorge. Nearby there is also a cave where you can watch karst phenomena. Another popular cave is Wookey Hole, which has an underground lake.

In 1903, the oldest human skeleton in Great Britain was found in one of the caves in the Cheddar Gorge. He is called the Man of Cheddar and has about 9,000 years. In turn, in the Wookey Hole cave, photos were shot for the series "Robin of Sherwood", in which she played the role of the seat of the legendary Hern.

There are several theories about the origin and meaning of the name of hills. It probably has Celtic or Old English roots and originally meant "plateau", "hill" or "heath".
