Ship SS Great Britain

SS Great Britain is a museum ship located in dry dock in Bristol. The first steam-powered ship in history was built in 1843. Until 1854 he held the title of the longest passenger ship. Designed by Isambard Kingd Brunel, he sailed on transatlantic routes between Bristol and New York.

In the year of its creation it was a real technological phenomenon, possessing several innovative solutions, mentioning even a steel hull, propeller drive instead of traditional paddle wheels or the largest steam engine in terms of power - 1000 HP. All this, however, had its cost: the shipbuilding cost £ 117,000.

SS Great Britain served passengers until 1886, when it rested on the Falkland Islands. It wasn't until 1970 that, thanks to subsidies from Sir Jack Hayward, he was transported to the dock in Bristol, where he acts as a museum, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. SS Great Britain belongs to the National Historical Fleet of Great Britain.
