Edwinstowe is a historic village in the heart of Sherwood Forest. It is a place associated with the legend of Robin Hood, which attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world each year.
In the Middle Ages, Sherwood Forest was a royal estate and was a hunting ground for English monarchs. The legend of Robin Hood and his team, which stood up for the oppressed by the royal sheriff of Nottingham, the inhabitants of the surrounding villages, comes from this time. There is an 800-year-old Major Oak in the forest, under which Robin Hood's headquarters was to be located. In turn, in Edwinstowe itself in the church of St. Maria, the robber's wedding with the beautiful Marion took place. The Robin Hood festival takes place in the village every summer.
Since 1969, Sherwood Forest and the neighboring Sherwood Pines Forest along with the Budby South Heath have been made available to tourists. There are walking paths, hiking and biking trails, and picnic areas. A big attraction of Edwinstowe is the Go Ape Sherwood Rope Park, where children and adults can try their hand at trekking in the treetops.
