Nottingham Castle, Museum & Art Gallery

Nottingham Castle was a large royal fortress in the Middle Ages and occasionally a royal residence. In the 17th century, it was partially demolished and now serves as a museum and art gallery. Permanent exhibitions include costumes and textiles, cutlery, glass and jewelry, as well as contemporary crafts and the Ballentyne ceramics collection. There are also temporary exhibitions of regional, national and international artists.

The museum was opened to visitors in 1878. Currently, the collection has about 800 oil paintings, over 4,000 watercolors, drawings and graphics, as well as a small collection of sculptures, including the medieval alabasters "Nottingham". Contemporary art is also part of the collection. Attention is drawn to the 15th-century alabaster sculptures and Roman votive gifts from the temple of Diana Nemorensis on Lake Nemi. However, most of them are no longer displayed in public.

The museum ticket also includes admission to the Nottingham Life Museum at Brewhouse Yard, which is nearby in five 17th-century huts.
