Calke Abbey
Calke Abbey is a country house from the early 18th century, built in the Baroque style. The interiors were left unchanged, some of them stand abandoned since the beginning of the 20th century. The building is surrounded by a picturesque park in which it was separated, the so-called "Kitchen garden", characteristic of English country residences. Near the residence there is also an old smithy, which can also be visited.
In the area where the residence stands, there was previously an Augustinian monastery. It was built in the 12th century and existed until the first half of the 16th century, when by order of Henry VIII all monasteries in England were dissolved and closed. The name "Calke Abbey" (abbey - abbey) was given to the residence only about a hundred years after it was built.
