Twycross Zoo
Twycross Zoo is a zoo, referred to as the "World Center of Primates". About 500 animals from 150 species live here, including elephants, sloths, snow leopards and extremely rare Amur leopards. This is the only zoo in the UK where you can see all four species of primates: gorillas, orangutans, chimpanzees and bonobos. There are also 17 species of smaller monkeys and the largest lemur herd in Europe.
The zoo was founded in 1963 by Nathalie Evans and Molly Badham, then recognized as an expert in the care of primates, especially chimpanzees. The standards for the care of monkeys and their breeding program, developed by the founders, began to be implemented in other zoos.
Twycross Zoo was the first British zoo where bonobo monkeys appeared. It is also the first in which young thirteen species of monkeys were born, including siamanga, agile gibbon and woolly.
