Lincoln Castle

The castle in Lincoln dates from the second half of the 11th century. Initially wooden, it gained a stone form in 1136 and has since survived almost unchanged, as one of the few Norman strongholds in England. The most important monument kept in the castle is one of the four original copies of the Magna Carta document, i.e. the Great Liberty Card from 1215. There are also remains of the octagonal Roman fountain and the cross of Queen Eleonora.

The castle has two towers. The first is the Observation Tower, which served not only for defense purposes, but also as an observatory of the sky. The second is the so-called The Lucy Tower, named after the Countess of Chester, Lucy of Bolingbroke.

When the castle ceased to perform defensive functions, a prison was created in it. Parts of it are now open to the public. It was also used as a movie set, including for the television production of "Downtown Abbey".
