Mendrisio is a picturesque, historic town surrounded by vineyards and forested mountains. A large part of the historic Italian-style architecture has been preserved here, and you can visit excavations from Roman times in the area.
The town has a mild climate and an atmosphere reminiscent of Italy. It is located near the border and many of the inhabitants use the Italian language. Since medieval times, the town is called Il Magnifico Borgo in Italian, meaning "beautiful place", which perfectly reflects its appearance and atmosphere.
There is no shortage of historic villas and representative Baroque and Classicist buildings in Mendrisio. There are vineyards around which lead many hiking and biking trails. A popular excursion destination is Monte Generoso, which can also be accessed by a cogwheel railway. There are beautiful views of the surrounding area from here.
Mendrisio's attraction is also the Monte San Giorgio Fossil Museum with exhibits from the UNESCO-listed mine.
