Poprad lies at the foot of the High Tatras, which create a picturesque setting for the city's buildings. In addition to the small Old Town, it attracts tourists primarily by one of the largest thermal baths in this part of Slovakia.
The city was created from the merger of several cities and settlements existing since the Middle Ages in the 20th century. The most important of them due to the trade fair held every Saturday was Spisska Sobota. It is now a district of Poprad and a reserve of urban architecture with a medieval market square, Renaissance burgher houses, the church of St. George and the Renaissance belfry characteristic of Spiš cities.
The present-day center of Poprad is built-up above all with tenement houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is formed by a lenticular market with a promenade coming out, surrounded by baroque and classicist tenements. The most valuable monument of this part of the city is the Romanesque-Gothic church of St. Idzi, in whose interior there are 15th-century polychromes depicting, among others panorama of the Tatra Mountains.
One of the main attractions of the city is the aquapark opened in 2004 using thermal springs. It consists of a recreation area with indoor and outdoor pools and a spa center with the possibility of using sauna and massage treatments.
Poprad is also a good starting point for skiers. There are several ski resorts in the area with slopes of varying degrees of difficulty. Constant connection by electric train with the High Tatras also means that in the summer you can go on mountain trips on the routes open to tourists.
