Mediaș is a historic city in Transylvania and, in the past, one of the most important castles in the region. In its center, a city castle surrounded by walls with a fortified church and watchtowers has been preserved.
In the 13th century, Hungarian kings began an organized colonization action in Transylvania. For this purpose, they brought in Saxon settlers, whom they settled in seven newly established cities. They are the source of the Polish name of this region, Transylvania. One of these cities was Mediaș, which soon developed into an important trade and craft center.
Mediaș Fortress is today the city's most important attraction. It is the so-called city castle, within which there is the whole center with tenement houses, churches and former market squares. Its main monument is the Gothic Evangelical Church of St. Margaret with a high clock tower, which is a characteristic element of the city's landscape. It is surrounded by former Saxon houses with sloping roofs covered with tiles, and around the entire building complex you can see fragments of walls and preserved towers with entrance gates, the TrumpetTower , the ForkeschTower and the Maria Tower .
In addition to the historic center in Mediaș, you can also visit the church of St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and several museums, such as the City Museum-HistoricalMuseum, Natural Gas Museum , the Stephan Ludwig RothMemorial House and the Hermann Oberth Memorial House , a German inventor born in Transylvania.
