Bâlea Lake
Local name: Bâlea Lac
The glacial lake is situated in the Fagaras Mountains at an altitude of 2034 m above sea level. It is located next to a tunnel that crosses the mountain range and is the beginning of the Transfagarasan Road, the second highest road in Romania. The area around the reservoir is a protected nature reserve.
The lake is 360 m long and its maximum depth reaches 11.3 m. Above the reservoir there are 2 year-round tourist shelters and a weather station. At the turn of 2005/2006, the first winter hotel in this part of Europe built of ice and snow was erected in its vicinity.
