Medieval Fortress

Local name: Cetatea Medievală

The medieval fortress was built in the fourteenth century on the site of older fortifications. It was protected by seven bastions connected by a huge defensive wall. Inside the fortress, in the southwestern part of the courtyard, there is a fortified church, which is the oldest temple in the city.

Bastions consist of 3 or 4 levels. They were built in the style of the late Renaissance, and their plans are similar to those of the Italian bastions from this period. At the lower levels you can see artillery holes. The main building of the fortress is a one-story building consisting of two seventeenth-century buildings connected by a wide wing. It houses the Archaeological and Historical Museum.

Every year, various cultural events take place at the fortress, such as tourist reconstructions, folk dance and poetry festivals, and car exhibitions. The Tîrgmureş Days and Beer Festival are organized here in spring and the Wine Festival in autumn.
